Facebook and Google Jump on the Group Buying Bandwagon
After failing to buy Groupon last year, it is hardly surprising that Google have entered the group deals market. Last week's launch in the US of Google Offers, in beta, did not reveal much about the new service, but it is unlikely to differ significantly from the other offerings already out there, providing users with a deep but short term discount on services and goods.
Neither is the service that Facebook have announced this week likely to break significant new ground. Facebook's "Social Deals" differs from the existing 'Facebook Deals" that have been running for a while now; these are more focused on offering immediate discounts and deals to users logging in to local shops and restaurants using Facebook Places, appealing mainly to mobile users.
The new Social Deals appear to have far more in common with the offers of the big players in the group deals area; internet marketing managers pay to have their deals shown to users, and users pay for the deal upfront, either with credit cards or, of course, Facebook credits.
Users can "like" deals without having to buy them, utilising the key marketing unique selling point of Facebook - the power of the community. Rather than having to forward an email if you think someone might be interested in a deal, just 'Like' it and all your network will be made aware of it instantly.
The service is completely US focused right now, but when it takes off, expect to see UK partners on board very quickly.
