Social media has fast become a staple of everyday life and the leader of the pack, Facebook, has triumphed to great heights; although it hasn't been without its problems. The social media giant has been embroiled in a long standing dispute with internet firm Yahoo which claims that Facebook has infringed on an estimated ten patents including online advertising and privacy controls and after months of bitterness it seems as though the firms have finally shaken hands and resolved their issues.

The bitter dispute, brought about by former CEO Simon Thompson has finally drawn its conclusion and even seen the two firms join teams in what could be a genius public relations move. Reports have indicated that the two are set to form an advertising alliance which will no doubt be welcomed by Yahoo who has had to see a £4billion loss at the hands of its former advertising company and Facebook which is in desperate need of an image revamp after failing to make a bang on the stock market.

It is yet to be revealed just how the truce will work and whether it will have the results the two firms' desire however there is no telling that this will set a fire under Google who has constantly been looking for ways to remain number one.

The three companies have been central to the growth of the internet, the importance of search and the ever growing importance of online marketing to business success and as the role of online in our everyday lives continues to grow; so too will the battle for the number one spot…all we can do is watch and wait to see what each internet giant comes up with next.
