Pssst...Want Some SEO Low Hanging Fruit?

Many companies spend thousands on focusing on getting PPC right, but neglect to spend the necessary time and energy on getting the basics of their SEO right; something that is likely to cost them dearly in the longer term.  Online marketing community Econsultancy has just published a report looking at SEO techniques, and has some interesting ideas on how to exploit what it calls low hanging fruit - or easy wins - in the SEO game.

Some of the top tips include:

* Remember that it is the content that is the heart of the SEO toolbox.  Expecting SEO experts to work magic with a website that has poorly executed, repetitive, unoriginal content is a losing game.  Whenever you publish a new piece of content, think hard - would I be happy to recommend a friend to read this? Is it educating me?

* Add social signals.  When you have got your top content, add social elements wherever you can; add Like buttons, +1 options, Tweet This functionality, and so on, to any type of content be it text or video.

* Ongoing site maintenance.  Do not just keep the site overhaul a yearly exercise, or even six monthly'; insist on ongoing cleaning and maintenance.  Analyse the feedback from your analysts on what actually works in SEP and what does not.  For example, if you are a retailer with frequently changing content, are all your internal links  working?

Anyone overhauling their sites soon, or looking to conduct an SEO audit, would do well to keep these tips in mind.
